Rather Mussels Together Than Lobster Alone – that's the spirit of the Rutherford YHA in Havelock. If you want to find a place with more warmth and character, you'd have to look for a very long time. Born in the seventies when the building went from being a school to a hostel, the green values of this YHA goes a long way back. If it's because of the staff's passion for the native flora and fauna; their fondness of people with a good story in their luggage; or if it's just to compensate for the fact that it's the former school of sir Ernest Rutherford (better known as the nuclear bomb inventor) is not quite clear. Anyhow – in the Rutherford YHA everybody's welcome – young or old, backpacker or trolleyroller, kiwi or flamingo. As long as you put your empty milk bottle in the right bin and donate your food scraps to the chicks in the backyard.
